MP Agriculture, Food Products and Crafts Have Received 27 Prestigious GI Tag
Many craft traditions as well as agriculture and horticulture products of Madhya Pradesh have received national level "GI Tag", marking significant achievement towards realizing the dream of 'Vocal For Local' of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav has congratulated progressive farmers of the state, food processing entrepreneurs, artisans and departments that encouraged them for this achievement.
GI Tag for MP Products
Traditional craft Bharewa Kala of Betul district has received this national recognition. Bharewa craft of Craft Village Tigaria has also been awarded GI Tag. President Droupadi Murmu recently (in December 2025) honored Bharewa craft artist Baldev Waghmare with National Handicrafts Award.
Apart from Betul, Khajuraho Stone Craft of Chhatarpur district, traditional wood craft of Chhatarpur district, stone craft of Gwalior and paper mache art of Gwalior have successfully received GI Tag.
Other GI Tag products of state are as ollows: Chanderi Saree; Maheshwari Saree and Fabric; Bagh Print of Dhar; leather toys of Indore; bell metal ware of Datia and Tikamgarh; Batik Print of Ujjain; marble craft of Jabalpur; Gond Painting of Dindori; handloom saree of Waraseoni; geometric pattern carpet of Gwalior; Panna diamond; iron craft of Dindori; Chinnor rice of Balaghat; Sundarja mango of Rewa; Sharbati wheat of Sehore and Vidisha; Mahoba Desawari Paan jointly of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh; Nagpuri orange of Chhindwara and Pandhurna region; Kadaknath chicken of Jhabua district; Sev of Ratlam; Gajak of Morena; Kathiya wheat of Bundelkhand region and garlic of Jaora.
Many other products of Madhya Pradesh are expected to join the list of GI Tag recipients soon. For this purpose, necessary efforts are being undertaken by various institutions at the level of state government and central government.
Special Achievement in Year 2024 and 2025
In year 2024, Kathiya wheat of Bundelkhand and garlic of Jaora in Ratlam district received GI Tag in Madhya Pradesh. Similarly, in the year 2025, five products of the state received GI Tag. These include Khajuraho Stone Craft of Chhatarpur district, traditional furniture of Chhatarpur, Bharewa Metal Craft of Betul, stone craft of Gwalior and paper mache craft of Gwalior.
Work of granting GI Tag comes under administrative control of Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade. After registration process, GI Tag remains valid for 10 years and can be renewed thereafter. GI Tag is granted by Geographical Indications Registry under Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry. From the perspective of product authenticity, receiving GI Tag carries great importance. It is notable that in the year 2004, Darjeeling Tea had the distinction of receiving the first GI Tag of India.
