UCC Bill Gujarat: What did Amit Shah say after passing of Uniform Civil Code Bill in Gujarat?
UCC Bill Gujarat: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has reacted to the passing of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in Gujarat.
On Wednesday, Amit Shah wrote on the social media platform 'X' that, following Uttarakhand, the UCC has now been passed in Gujarat as well.
He wrote, "It has been the BJP's resolve since its inception that there should be a uniform law for every citizen in the country. Under the leadership of Modi ji, BJP state governments are continuously moving forward in this direction. I am delighted that, following Uttarakhand, Gujarat has now also demonstrated its commitment by undertaking the historic task of passing the Uniform Civil Code Bill."
Home Minister Shah further wrote, "That the country should be governed not on the basis of appeasement, but through uniform laws for all citizens—this is both our priority and our resolve."
Gujarati, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel introduced this Bill in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday. A committee led by retired Justice Ranjana Desai had been constituted to draft the Bill.
Prior to the Bill's introduction, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi described it as 'historic.'
After a debate lasting approximately seven and a half hours, when the Bill was put to a vote, it was passed by a majority. During the voting process, the state's main opposition party, the Congress, walked out of the House.
The bill passed by the Gujarat Assembly also introduces a common legal framework governing related matters such as live-in relationships. The legislation will not apply to all members of Scheduled Tribes or groups whose customary rights are protected under the Constitution.
