The global energy crisis triggered by a U.S.-Israel war with Iran is "extremely serious" and has become even worse than the oil crises of the 1970s. Fatih Birol, head of the International Energy Agency (IEA), issued this warning on Monday, as escalating tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz continue to pose a threat to global supply chains. He warned that a global energy crisis resulting from a conflict involving Iran could prove even more severe than the oil crises of the 1970s.

IEA stands ready to take action

Speaking at the National Press Club in Canberra, Birol stated that IEA is keeping a close watch on market conditions and stands ready to take action—in coordination with member countries—should disruptions intensify. "If necessary, we will certainly do so," he said. "We will analyze the markets and consult with our member countries."

Earlier this month, following a surge in global crude oil markets caused by the conflict, the agency's members agreed to release a record 400 million barrels of oil from their strategic reserves in an effort to stabilize prices.

Warning comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tension

This warning comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tension, sparked by a stern warning issued by U.S. President Donald Trump to Iran. Trump declared that if Tehran fails to reopen the Strait of Hormuz—a critical transit route for global oil shipments—Iranian power plants would be "destroyed and eliminated". This warning signals a significant escalation in tensions, particularly following his recent statements suggesting that the U.S. was considering "scaling down" its military operations in the region.

U.S. continues to bolster its military presence

Despite this, the U.S. continues to bolster its military presence and is deploying additional naval forces to West Asia. Israel has also signaled an intensification of its campaign, with Defense Minister Israel Katz stating that attacks on Iran will increase significantly. The Israeli military announced that it targeted over 200 locations during coordinated strikes against Iranian and Hezbollah positions in Lebanon over the weekend.

Hostilities continue on the ground, and Iranian missile attacks have targeted southern Israel. In Arad, at least 74 people were injured. Another missile struck a building in Dimona, where Israel's nuclear facility is located.

Meanwhile, Iran has tightened internal security measures and detained at least 25 individuals accused of sharing information regarding the damage caused by the attacks with foreign networks.
