'Hub and Spoke' Model to debut at Varanasi Airport; Air India to Launch international connectivity, how overseas travelers from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities will benefit
New Delhi: Passengers traveling abroad from Varanasi will no longer need to first travel to major airports like Delhi or Mumbai to complete immigration formalities; under the 'Hub and Spoke' model, they will be able to complete these procedures right at Varanasi Airport, with Delhi Airport serving solely as a transit point.
Union Minister for Civil Aviation Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu recently urged airlines, airport operators, and other stakeholders to promote this model during a meeting held with them. The first implementation of this model is set to take place at Varanasi Airport, and the responsibility for this initiative has been entrusted to Air India.
The Tata Group-owned airline announced on Wednesday that it is preparing to launch flight operations from Varanasi Airport under the 'Hub and Spoke' model.
Campbell Wilson, CEO and MD of Air India, stated, "This is a transformative step for Indian aviation. The 'Hub and Spoke' model will not only strengthen connectivity but also ensure the optimal utilization of the developed airport infrastructure across the country. It will generate a strong multiplier effect and serve as a catalyst for the nation's broader growth trajectory."
As part of its network expansion and in alignment with the 'Hub and Spoke' model, Air India is gearing up to launch international connectivity from Varanasi. This initiative will strengthen the city's linkages with other global destinations and improve accessibility for travelers residing in the surrounding regions.
P. Balaji, Group Head (Governance, Risk, Compliance, and Corporate Affairs) at Air India, remarked:
"The launch of international 'Hub and Spoke' connectivity from Varanasi reflects our focus on expanding the country's global aviation footprint beyond the metropolitan centers. This initiative will offer significant benefits to international travelers from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities by reducing travel time, while simultaneously making the journey smoother and more convenient."
