Kerala Assembly elections 2026: PM Modi, Rahul Gandhi hold rallies in last ditch attempt to sway voters
Kerala Assembly elections 2026: The Kerala Assembly elections 2026 have reached their most decisive and thrilling juncture. Ahead of the polling scheduled for April 9, the state witnesses the convergence of two of the country's most prominent political figures. Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are both campaigning on Kerala soil on —on the very same day—seeking votes for their respective parties.
Electoral contest is triangular this time
This electoral contest is a triangular one this time around; the CPI(M)-led LDF faces the formidable challenge of retaining power, while the Congress-led UDF is making an all-out effort to stage a comeback, and the NDA, too, harbors high hopes for a major breakthrough.
Excitement among Cong workers
Congress's star campaigner, Rahul Gandhi, arrived in Kerala around 10:00 AM Saturday morning, immediately injecting fresh momentum into his election campaign. Today, he is participating in a total of four events organized across three different districts of the state. His campaign trail began in the Alappuzha constituency, following which he is scheduled to interact with the public in Kattappana and Kochi.
Rahul Gandhi's final rally of the day is scheduled for about 3 PM in Ernakulam, where he will rally support in favor of the UDF candidates. A palpable sense of excitement is evident among Congress workers regarding this visit by Rahul Gandhi.
PM Modi to Rally in Thiruvalla
On the other hand, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also deployed its biggest political face—Prime Minister Narendra Modi—into the electoral fray. PM Modi is scheduled to land at Thiruvananthapuram Airport around 2:30 PM this afternoon and will address a massive public rally at the Thiruvalla Public Stadium at 4 PM.
PM to participate in grand roadshow
The Prime Minister will also participate in a grand roadshow to garner support for the NDA candidates. This time, the BJP is contesting the Kerala elections alongside strong allies such as the BDJS, Twenty20, the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), the Shiv Sena, and the National People's Party (NPP). The primary objective of PM Modi's visit is to secure a decisive mandate in favor of the NDA. The Verdict on April 9
The contest in the ongoing elections for Kerala's 140 Assembly seats is particularly fierce this time around. According to the final voter list, approximately 27.1 million voters will decide the fate of 890 candidates. The Election Commission has scheduled the polling for April 9, 2026, with the results set to be declared nearly a month later, on May 4.
Political pundits believe that the events attended today by Rahul Gandhi and PM Modi will have a direct impact on those voters who have not yet made up their minds. Now, all eyes are fixed on whether the people of Kerala will uphold tradition or embark on a new political experiment.
