Loan on Aadhaar Card? Is this a scam? How to stay safe?
Currently, a dangerous online scam is spreading rapidly across social media and YouTube, specifically targeting the middle class and individuals in urgent need of funds. This fraudulent scheme claims that under the "Pradhan Mantri Loan Yojana" (Prime Minister's Loan Scheme), one can obtain a loan of up to Rs 3 lakh using nothing more than an Aadhaar Card. However, the government has categorically clarified that no such scheme exists and that this is a complete fraud.
Ordinary people easily fall into its trap
This scam is designed with extreme cunning to ensure that ordinary people easily fall into its trap. Advertisements feature graphics resembling official government logos—often accompanied by calls to action such as "Apply Now"—to lend them an air of authenticity. In many instances, these ads also include embedded links or QR codes.
Users are redirected to a fraudulent website or mobile app
As soon as a user clicks on such a link, they are redirected to a fraudulent website or mobile application where they are prompted to provide sensitive personal information, such as their Aadhaar number, mobile number, and bank account details. Once this information is submitted, the fraudsters immediately exploit it for their own illicit gain.
Fraudsters target people seeking quick loans
To maximize the reach of this scam, fraudsters are relying on sponsored advertisements—meaning they are paying to promote these fraudulent ads. They specifically target individuals who are seeking quick loans. By employing phrases such as "Hurry Up!" or "Limited Time Offer," they pressure people into clicking hastily—a mistake that often proves to be extremely costly.
Funds are siphoned directly from bank accounts
If an individual clicks on such a link and shares their personal information, they face the risk of significant financial loss. Their identity could be stolen, or funds could be siphoned directly from their bank accounts. In many cases, fraudsters may leverage this stolen information to perpetrate even larger-scale frauds in the future, thereby multiplying the financial damage manifold.
How to Stay Safe
Remaining vigilant is absolutely crucial to avoid falling victim to such scams. If you encounter an advertisement claiming to offer a substantial loan without requiring extensive documentation, do not trust it. Always verify the authenticity of any government scheme by visiting the official government portal: myscheme.gov.in. Never share your personal or banking information on any unfamiliar website or app. If a link contains spelling errors, a suspicious URL, or creates a sense of urgency, recognize it as a scam.
What to Do If You Encounter Such Content
If you come across an advertisement or message of this nature, do not ignore it; instead, report it immediately. You can report it to government platforms such as PIB Fact Check or flag it on social media. Remember: "easy and quick money" is often a trap designed to deceive you. A little common sense and vigilance can save you from significant financial loss.
