UP Voter List SIR Update: Why latest figures released by State Election Commission has sparked unease within political parties

Following the recently concluded SIR (Special Intensive Revision) process in Uttar Pradesh, a striking scenario has emerged. The latest data released by the State Election Commission has sparked unease within political parties.

The figures resulting from this round of voter list revision could potentially steer the future politics of Uttar Pradesh in a new direction. Interestingly, the brunt of these deletions has fallen most heavily upon those regions that have long been considered impregnable strongholds of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

 A headache for the BJP?

The final list released in UP following the SIR process has proven to be nothing short of a headache for the BJP. According to the data, a massive decline—ranging from 18 to 23 percent—has been recorded in the number of voters within major urban areas dominated by the BJP. In the capital city of Lucknow alone, the voter count has dropped by approximately 22.89 percent, while in Ghaziabad, this figure stands close to 20 percent.

Similarly, reports indicate that voter numbers have declined by 19.33 percent in Noida, 19.42 percent in Kanpur Nagar, and 18.75 percent in Meerut. These are the very cities where the BJP has consistently remained invincible.

Final figures appear to validate Yogi's prediction

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had hinted at the very outset of this process that the revision might result in the deletion of a significant number of votes belonging to BJP supporters—and now, the final figures appear to validate that prediction.

Voter deletions significantly lower in Muslim-majority dists

While BJP's urban strongholds have witnessed a massive pruning of voter lists on one hand, the situation appears quite different in Muslim-majority districts on the other. An analysis of the data reveals that in regions where the minority population holds greater influence, the percentage of voter deletions has remained significantly lower.

For instance, the reduction in voter numbers stands at just 10.48 percent in Saharanpur, 10 percent in Moradabad, 10.93 percent in Shamli, and 10.38 percent in Muzaffarnagar. Even in districts like Amroha and Azamgarh, this figure has remained confined to a range of just 9 to 10 percent.

Direct impact on electoral strategy for 'Mission 2027'

Experts believe that this could have a direct impact on the electoral strategy for 'Mission 2027.' Consequently, political parties will now have to strive anew to consolidate their vote banks.

New challenges emerge on VIP Seats

This massive reduction in votes has also disrupted the electoral equations on several of the state's "VIP seats." The contest is set to become particularly intriguing in those constituencies where the margin between victory and defeat was previously very narrow.

On the Prayagraj City South seat—currently represented by Minister Nand Gopal Gupta 'Nandi'—approximately 99,059 votes have been struck off the rolls. Given that his victory margin in the previous election was a mere 26,182 votes, such a significant reduction could make his path ahead considerably more arduous.

Similarly, on the Kunda seat in Pratapgarh, where Raja Bhaiya had secured a victory margin of 30,418 votes, the total vote count has now decreased by 53,539. A similar situation prevails on the Pathardeva seat in Deoria, where new challenges have now emerged for Agriculture Minister Surya Pratap Shahi.

This is the first time since 2003 that such a large-scale campaign has been undertaken in Uttar Pradesh. Political analysts argue that the majority of the more than two crore names removed from the rolls likely belong to individuals who have either relocated, passed away, or lacked sufficient documentation. However, opposition parties have also raised questions regarding this exercise.
