Varanasi To witness Various Aspects of Emperor Vikramaditya Through Mahanatya: CM Mohan Yadav; Historic Staging to Herald Cultural Renaissance

MP Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav stated that the saga of the valour of Chakravarti Samrat Vikramaditya, the pioneer of the Indian system of time reckoning and a symbol of justice, will now resonate through the lanes of the sacred city of Varanasi, the abode of Baba Vishwanath. 

A grand celebration narrating the story of India’s pride and progress will be held at the BLW Ground in Varanasi from April 3 to 5. The three-day event, jointly organised by the Governments of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, will feature the historic staging of the grand theatrical production ‘Samrat Vikramaditya’.

CM Mohan Yadav said that under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the event will bring to life the golden chapters of Indian history. The inaugural ceremony will be held in the presence of Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath and Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. The objective of the grand event is to acquaint the public with India’s glorious past, the scientific significance of the Vikram Samvat, and the unparalleled contributions of that era.

A Continuing Journey of Cultural Pride of Mahanatya

The journey of the grand play ‘Samrat Vikramaditya’ began in 2007. Over the years, it has been staged in major cities such as Ujjain, Bhopal, Agra and Hyderabad, receiving appreciation from thousands of viewers. In April 2025, its staging at the historic Red Fort in Delhi was specially appreciated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who described the presentation as a remarkable effort to bring the grandeur of Samrat Vikramaditya and India’s glorious heritage to the masses.

Mahanatya: Confluence of Valour and Justice of Samrat Vikramaditya

The grand theatrical production portrays the life of the great emperor of Ujjaini, highlighting his courage, wisdom, and commitment to justice. Through powerful dialogues, the play presents the historical and scientific significance of the Vikram Samvat, which began in 57 BCE. Audiences will witness captivating episodes from ‘Singhasan Battisi’ and ‘Betal Pachisi’, along with references from the Bhavishya Purana. 

Blend of Grand Scale and Modern Technology

The spectacular Mahanatya to be staged for one-hour and 45-minute will present a unique blend of art and technology. More than 175 artists and supporting performers will participate in the play. To bring authenticity to the stage, elements such as chariots, horses, palanquins and camels will be used. The production will also feature three separate stages, advanced graphics, and special effects, creating visually stunning and immersive scenes.

Alongside the theatrical presentation, several educational exhibitions will be organised at the venue.
