West Bengal Election 2026: In West Bengal politics, Mamata Banerjee is a name that has not only dismantled a decades-old Leftist ideology but has also further cemented her dominance through a string of consecutive electoral victories.

From the time she rose to power in 2011 until 2021, her party—the TMC—has maintained a firm grip on the state's politics. It is now pertinent to understand how, over so many consecutive years, Mamata Banerjee has managed to transform Bengal into her own impregnable fortress.

The defining characteristic of Mamata Banerjee's politics is her strong grassroots connect and her direct rapport with the common people. Popularly known as 'Didi' (Sister), Mamata projects herself as a humble, resilient leader who has risen through struggle. Her simplicity—manifested in her signature white Saree, simple slippers, and an unpretentious lifestyle—brings her even closer to the masses.

BJP's Shift in Strategy Set to Spark a Fierce Battle in Bengal

But his time around, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has executed a significant and meaningful overhaul of its electoral strategy. Instead of engaging in personal attacks against Mamata Banerjee, the party is now focusing its attention squarely on substantive issues such as good governance and corruption.

The BJP's boldest move has been to field Suvendu Adhikari from the Bhabanipur constituency—a seat that serves as the personal political bastion of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee herself.

Consequently, Mamata is compelled to expend greater effort to secure her own seat—a necessity that could potentially impact the momentum of her statewide election campaign.

Another significant change lies in the number of phases in which the election is being conducted. This time, the polls are being held in just two phases, a move expected to lead to a reduction in incidents of violence and facilitate the more effective deployment of central security forces.

BJP Emerges as a Formidable Challenger to the TMC

West Bengal's politics currently stands at a historic crossroads. For Mamata Banerjee—who has held the reins of state power for the past 15 years—the 2026 election looms as arguably the greatest trial by fire she has faced in her political career thus far.

While 'Didi' commands an unwavering mass base on one side, the BJP has emerged on the other as a serious contender—one that has evidently learned valuable lessons from its past political missteps.

Regional Identity and the ‘Daughter of Bengal’ Narrative

Mamata Banerjee has successfully aligned herself with the very ‘identity of Bengal.’ During the 2021 elections, through slogans such as "Bengal wants only its own daughter," she portrayed the opposition as ‘outsiders’—a narrative that resonated deeply with local voters. Furthermore, slogans like "Khela Hobe" (The Game is On) served to decisively tilt the electoral atmosphere in her favor.

A Strong Grip at the Grassroots Level

The movements in Nandigram and Singur established her as the true savior of the poor and the farmers. Moreover, the TMC’s organizational network today extends to approximately 70,000 booths across Bengal, where her army of dedicated party workers remains active around the clock. This is precisely why, despite facing numerous challenges, defeating ‘Didi’ has never been an easy task for opposition parties.

Despite the BJP's shift in strategy, conquering the fortress of Bengal may not prove easy for the saffron party.

Mamata’s Welfare Schemes

Additionally, the welfare schemes implemented by the Mamata Banerjee government have served as a major foundation for her political success. Schemes designed with women and the underprivileged classes at their core have successfully cultivated a durable vote bank. The Kanyashree Scheme, for instance, even received recognition from the United Nations. This initiative brought millions of girls into the fold of education, while the Lakshmir Bhandar scheme provided direct financial assistance to crores of women. These initiatives significantly boosted Mamata Banerjee’s popularity among female voters—an impact that is clearly reflected in the electoral results.
