What strategy BCCI is devising for Team India's star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah
Team India's star fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, is once again in the spotlight. Renowned for his lethal and economical bowling, Bumrah has now become the subject of a major strategic plan being formulated by the BCCI. Specifically, with the World Test Championship and the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind, the Board is devising a strategy regarding his role.
Bumrah's appearances in Test matches have been limited
Due to Jasprit Bumrah's unique bowling action, his body is subjected to immense physical strain; consequently, the BCCI has long prioritized his workload management. This is the reason why, while he is a regular fixture in white-ball cricket, his appearances in Test matches have been limited. However, according to recent reports, the Board now wants him to play in every Test match throughout the current World Test Championship cycle.
India scheduled to play nine Test matches during this WTC cycle
India is scheduled to play a total of nine Test matches during this World Test Championship cycle, and plans are being laid to field Bumrah in every single one of these fixtures. Team India currently holds almost every ICC trophy, yet the dream of winning the World Test Championship remains unfulfilled. In light of this, the team management aims to bridge this gap by deploying their greatest weapon—Bumrah—in every match.
Keeping Bumrah fit will be the biggest challenge
Following IPL 2026, India is set to play a single Test match against Afghanistan starting June 6th; this match will not be part of the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. Subsequently, the team is scheduled to play two Test matches each against Sri Lanka and New Zealand. Furthermore, in January of next year, Australia will tour India for a five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series between the two nations. Given this entire schedule, keeping Jasprit Bumrah fit will undoubtedly be the biggest challenge.
Could Be Rested for ODI Series
According to reports, in an effort to keep Jasprit Bumrah fit for Test cricket, the selectors may opt to rest him for certain ODI series. This strategy aims to ensure he remains fresh and ready for major fixtures. Notably, during the tour of England last year, he played only three out of five Test matches as part of a workload management strategy. Now it remains to be seen how successful this new strategy proves to be in helping Team India win the World Test Championship title.
