Vat Savitri Vrat 2026 Date: Vat Savitri Vrat is a significant festival observed by married women. It is celebrated annually on the day of Amavasya (New Moon) during the month of Jyeshtha.

On this day, married women observe a fast to pray for their husbands' longevity, good health, a blissful married life, and the blessing of children; they also worship the Banyan tree. The Amavasya Tithi (New Moon phase) of the month of Jyeshtha begins on May 26 at 12:11 PM and will continue until 8:31 AM on May 27.

The legend of Savitri and Satyavan is recited

According to religious scriptures, Vat Savitri Vrat is regarded as a symbol of Akhand Saubhagya—eternal marital bliss. It is a prominent Nirjala (waterless) fast observed by married women on Jyeshtha Amavasya to pray for their husbands' longevity, health, and enduring marital fortune. On this day, the Banyan (Vat) tree is worshipped—as it is believed to be the abode of the deities Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh—and the legend of Savitri and Satyavan is recited.

How to Perform the Vat Savitri Vrat Puja

The woman observing the fast should get up during the Brahma Muhurat (the auspicious pre-dawn period), take a ritual bath, and dress in clean, fresh garments—preferably in red or yellow colors.

Cleanse and tidy the area beneath the specific Banyan (Vat) tree where the worship is to be performed, and spread a prayer mat (Asana) for the ritual.

Install an idol or a framed image of Savitri and Satyavan at the worship site.

Offer water at the roots of the Banyan tree, followed by offerings of sandalwood paste (Chandan), turmeric (Haldi), Roli (vermilion powder), Akshat (unbroken rice grains), and flowers.

Perform seven circumambulations (Parikrama) around the Banyan tree while winding a red cotton thread around its trunk; with each round, pray for your husband's longevity.

Offer items associated with marital adornment (Shringar), such as Sindoor (vermilion), Kumkum, a Bindi, bangles, Mehendi (henna), etc.

Recite or listen to the Vrat Katha (the legend associated with the fast) with complete devotion. This constitutes the most integral part of this ritual.

Upon the conclusion of the worship, perform the Aarti (ritual lamp ceremony) for the Banyan tree and for Savitri and Satyavan, and offer your prayers with folded hands.

• After the puja, donate fruits, clothing, sweets, or money to Brahmins or the needy. This completes the fast.

• On the following morning, after sunrise, break the fast by consuming fruits or a light meal.
