When Will DK Shivakumar Assume Power in Karnataka, What Cong MLA Iqbal Hussain Told?
Speculation regarding a potential leadership change in Karnataka intensified on Tuesday after Congress MLA Iqbal Hussain claimed that Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar could assume power by May 15.
These remarks, made in Ramanagara, have once again stirred up political circles within the Karnataka Congress—a party where discussions concerning future leadership changes have surfaced periodically ever since the party returned to power in 2023.
Speaking to reporters, Hussain stated, "We all desire to see DK Shivakumar assume power. Under his leadership, we wish to witness even greater developmental progress in the state. This sentiment is shared by many MLAs, ministers, party workers, leaders, and the general public alike."
He also attached a specific timeline to his assertion. The MLA remarked, "I believe he will assume power by May 15; that is both my wish and my hope."
Although Iqbal Hussain did not explicitly mention the Chief Minister's post, his statement is being interpreted within certain sections of the Congress party as a direct indication of growing support for entrusting Shivakumar with a more prominent leadership role in the state.
These comments hold significant political weight, given that Shivakumar is a powerful Vokkaliga leader who served as the President of the Karnataka Congress during the 2023 Assembly elections, and has long been viewed as a leading contender for the top executive post.
Hussain also expressed his appreciation for the support he has received from the people of his constituency, portraying himself as a grassroots leader deeply committed to public service.
"I am an MLA, I am a Minister, and the people of this region have showered me with immense love and trust," he said. "It is my privilege to have been nurtured and embraced in this manner. What more could I possibly ask for? In their eyes—for them—I am their Minister, I am their Chief Minister; I am everything to them."
He further added, "I shall continue to serve in my capacity as a Minister, an MLA, and a public servant, and I will remain dedicated to my duties as a son of this House." The Congress leadership has not yet made any official comment on Hussain's remarks.
