Taking a major step towards implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), the Madhya Pradesh government has constituted a six-member high-level committee.

This committee will study the feasibility, legal aspects, and social implications of implementing the UCC in the state.

The committee is being chaired by retired Supreme Court Judge, Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai.

According to an order issued by the government, the committee will review marriage, inheritance, and family laws associated with various religions and communities, and will assess how a uniform law can be implemented.

Additionally, the committee will study the experiences of other states as well as significant judicial pronouncements. It will also examine the models adopted by Uttarakhand and Gujarat.

The committee comprises legal experts, administrative officials, and representatives from various sections of society. It is mandated to submit its report to the state government within 60 days, based on which the future strategy will be formulated.

It is noteworthy that the issue of the UCC has long been a subject of national debate. In this context, this move by the Madhya Pradesh government is being viewed as a significant initiative in this direction at the state level.

While the opposition has raised questions regarding this decision, the government maintains that its objective is to ensure equality and justice for all citizens.

In addition to the Chairperson—retired Supreme Court Judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai—the committee includes retired IAS officer Shatrughna Singh, legal expert Anoop Nair, educationist Gopal Sharma, social worker Budhpal Singh, and Additional Secretary of the General Administration Department, Ajay Katesariya, as members.
