W Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari has issued a strong statement on Wednesday regarding illegal migrants and the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Adhikari stated that people who do not fall under the provisions of the CAA and whose names do not appear in official records could face legal action, potentially including the process of deportation from the country. This statement has once again brought the issues of the CAA and illegal infiltration in West Bengal to the forefront of political discourse.

Following his statement, anxiety has reportedly heightened among those whose names are not included in voter records or relevant citizenship documents. The issue of implementing the CAA and NRC in the state has remained a politically sensitive subject for several years.

Mamata and TMC govt had opposed the implementation of CAA and NRC

Previously, Mamata Banerjee and the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) government had strongly opposed the implementation of the CAA and NRC in Bengal. Mamata Banerjee had publicly asserted on multiple occasions that she would not allow these measures to be enforced within the state.

The BJP has repeatedly accused the previous state government of delaying administrative coordination with the Centre regarding the identification of illegal migrants. The party has also alleged that such delays have compromised border management and slowed down legal proceedings related to cases involving infiltration.

This issue has also sparked a political debate regarding the functioning of central investigative agencies within the state. BJP leaders have claimed that agencies such as the National Investigation Agency (NIA) have not received adequate cooperation at the local level during certain investigations. BJP leaders also cited the Bhupatinagar incident—where an NIA team was allegedly attacked while conducting an investigation—to express their concerns regarding security and law and order in the state.
