Madhya Pradesh is forging a new identity for itself in the field of wildlife conservation. The state is emerging as an international hub for vulture conservation. Recently, the inspiring journey of a Cinereous Vulture—closely linked to Madhya Pradesh—has brought global recognition to the state's conservation efforts.

This rare Cinereous Vulture was rescued on December 19, 2025, from the Sironj region of Vidisha district. Found in an injured and weakened state, the vulture was treated by experts at the Vulture Conservation Breeding Centre in Kerwa, an initiative operated jointly by Van Vihar National Park (Bhopal) and the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS).

Vulture was released in natural habitat

Following its recovery, on February 23, 2026, Chief Minister Dr. Yadav released the bird back into its natural habitat at the Halali Dam in Raisen district. After its release, the vulture remained in the Halali Dam area for approximately one month, gradually re-adapting itself to the natural environment.

GPS tracking of the bird was initiated by Van Vihar in collaboration with WWF-India and the BNHS. This system allows for the scientific monitoring of the vulture's movements and migratory patterns. According to the data obtained from the tracking, the vulture commenced its long international journey from the Halali Dam on April 10, 2026.

Reached Uzbekistan on May 4

Traveling through Rajasthan, it crossed the borders of Pakistan and Afghanistan, finally reaching Uzbekistan on May 4, 2026. During this epic journey, the bird covered a distance of over 3,000 kilometers.

This remarkable journey stands as a living testament to the extraordinary navigational capabilities, endurance, and resilience of vultures. Furthermore, it underscores the Madhya Pradesh government's deep commitment to wildlife conservation and its adoption of a scientific approach toward the cause.

Through sustained efforts in the field of vulture conservation—bolstered by modern treatment facilities, scientific monitoring, and collaboration with national and international organizations—Madhya Pradesh has emerged as a source of inspiration for both the nation and the global forest and wildlife conservation community. The state is establishing a strong presence for itself on the world map in the realm of vulture conservation.
