India is the world's third-largest energy consumer. However, the country still relies heavily on imports to meet a significant portion of its energy requirements—including crude oil, LPG, CNG, and LNG. About 90 percent of India's gas imports originate from the Gulf region and pass through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

Amidst escalating tensions between Iran and the United States, and concerns regarding blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, India faces mounting challenges related to energy security. Against this backdrop, a good news gas come from the Pune-based CSIR–National Chemical Laboratory (CSIR-NCL). Indian scientists are working on an indigenous technology that could help reduce the country's dependence on imported LPG in the future. This technology is known as Dimethyl Ether (DME).

How Can DME Serve as an Alternative to LPG?

According to Dr. T. Raja, a scientist at CSIR-NCL, many of DME's characteristics and applications are similar to those of LPG. Its primary advantage lies in the fact that it can be produced using resources readily available within India—such as coal, biomass, and methanol. If successfully implemented on a large scale, DME could significantly reduce India's reliance on LPG imports.

DME can be easily blended with propane and butane

Dr. Raja explained that DME can be easily blended with propane and butane, thereby enabling its use as both a domestic cooking fuel and an industrial fuel. In the initial phase, scientists plan to introduce a blend consisting of 20 percent DME and 80 percent LPG. This implies that consumers will not need to replace their existing gas stoves or cylinders. Potential Savings of $4.04 Billion

India can save about Rs 34,200 crore in foreign exchange

Reports suggest that adopting DME technology could help India save approximately $4.04 billion (roughly Rs 34,200 crore) in foreign exchange. This development comes at a critical juncture, as the government seeks ways to reduce its reliance on imports and alleviate pressure on foreign exchange reserves. Concurrently, global demand for LPG—along with associated price pressures—continues to rise steadily.

DME-LPG Blends Can Also Power Auto-Rickshaws

Scientists also believe that the application of DME extends far beyond just domestic cooking fuel. Auto-rickshaws—currently powered by LPG—could also operate using DME-based fuel blends. This implies that this technology could not only contribute to the nation's energy security but also provide cleaner and more cost-effective transportation solutions.

Experts state that if India implements a program to blend 20 percent DME into its domestic LPG supply, the country could reduce its annual LPG imports by approximately 6.3 million tonnes.

How is DME Produced?

The production of DME utilizes coal gasification technology. In this process, coal is first converted into a synthetic gas, commonly referred to as 'syngas.' Subsequently, this syngas undergoes further processing to yield DME.

Scientists say that DME combustion generates lower emissions compared to traditional hydrocarbon fuels; for this reason, it is increasingly being viewed as a clean, alternative fuel source.

BIS Approval 

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has already approved a 20 percent DME-LPG blend for use within India. However, the development and adoption of this technology within the country are currently still in their nascent stages. Experts believe that, aided by supportive government policies and adequate investment, this sector could witness rapid growth in the coming years.

China Leads Global DME Production

Currently, China dominates the global production of DME, accounting for approximately 90 percent of the total worldwide output. India is now striving to take a significant step toward bolstering its energy self-reliance through the application of this technology.

Scientists working at a laboratory in Pune view this project not merely as a research initiative, but as a critical mission directly linked to India's long-term energy security. If successfully developed, this technology could play a pivotal role in shaping the country's future energy landscape and reducing its dependence on imported fuels.
