Tamil Nadu: VCK finally extends support to Vijay; TVK now all set to form government
Six days after the declaration of the Tamil Nadu Assembly election results, actor Vijay will finally be able to form the government. The VCK, which won two seats in the election, handed over its letter of support to Vijay's TVK party on Saturday evening, following three days of deliberation.
With this development, the TVK has secured the requisite number of 118 legislators needed to form the government. Just minutes after the VCK announced its support, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) also declared its unconditional support—comprising its two legislators—for the TVK.
Cong shifts its five legislators to Hyderabad amidst fears of horse-trading
Meanwhile, the Congress party has shifted its five legislators to Hyderabad amidst fears of horse-trading. According to party sources, Melur MLA P. Viswanathan is leading this group of legislators. Sources further suggest that P. Viswanathan could be appointed as a minister once the TVK government is formed.
The TVK secured 108 seats in the 234-member Legislative Assembly. Of these, Vijay himself won two seats. The party had already received letters of support from the Congress (5 legislators), as well as from the CPI and CPI(M) (two legislators each). With the backing of the VCK and the IUML, Vijay will now command the support of 121 legislators—a figure that stands two seats above the simple majority mark.
