The controversy surrounding the National Wrestling Tournament scheduled to be held in Gonda has escalated. Vinesh Phogat demanded a change of venue citing apprehensions regarding security and potential bias. However, WFI President Sanjay Singh rejected this demand, personally guaranteeing her safety.

Meanwhile, Vinesh Phogat has issued a warning stating that the government will be held responsible for any untoward incident that may occur. Vinesh is set to compete in the 57 kg category in this tournament, which is scheduled to take place from May 10 to 12.

Sanjay Singh, President of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), categorically stated that the venue for the National Open Ranking Tournament in Gonda will not be altered, and he has assumed full responsibility for Vinesh Phogat's security. This assurance was provided after Vinesh expressed her concerns regarding security and potential bias.

Individuals close to Brij Bhushan could influence the results: Vinesh

On Sunday, Vinesh warned that if anything were to happen to her or her team during the tournament in Gonda, the Government of India would be held accountable. Additionally, she raised apprehensions regarding the possibility of biased officiating during the bouts. In a video released ahead of her return to the mat—marking her comeback after nearly 18 months—Vinesh stated that individuals close to former WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh could potentially influence the results of a competition held at a venue associated with him.

Absolutely no scope for bias: Sanjay Singh

In a statement, Sanjay Singh said, "If Vinesh is concerned about her safety, I assure her that I personally guarantee it. We have referees accredited by the UWW (United World Wrestling), and all bouts are recorded; therefore, there is absolutely no scope for bias."

He added, "This is an open tournament; it is entirely Vinesh Phogat's decision whether or not to participate. We will not change the venue." The tournament is scheduled to run from May 10 to 12. The first day will feature men's freestyle trials, followed by Greco-Roman events (May 11) and women's competitions (May 12). Vinesh will compete in the 57 kg category. She had voiced her concerns earlier in the day.
