Why 'X' Account of 'Cockroach Janata Party' Has Been Banned?
The 'X' account of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP)—a social media-based political movement that recently garnered massive headlines online—has now been blocked in India. This sudden action has sparked a fresh debate regarding freedom of expression, political pressure, and the growing influence of online youth movements.
The controversy stems from a remark allegedly made by Supreme Court Justice Surya Kant during a hearing last week. According to reports, the Justice referred to unemployed youth as "cockroaches"; this statement immediately triggered massive outrage across social media platforms. As criticism mounted, the Justice subsequently issued a clarification regarding the remark.
But by then, the damage had already been done.
Angry reactions began pouring in from students and job-seeking youth, many of whom perceived the remark as a personal insult. Amidst this charged atmosphere, the "Cockroach Janata Party" emerged online—initially as a satirical concept, but it soon evolved into a full-blown protest movement. Within just a few days, the party's social media pages began amassing millions of followers.
Party's Instagram account remains active
While the party's Instagram account remains active, its 'X' account has now been blocked within India. Prior to the ban, the page had witnessed explosive growth and, according to supporters, had even surpassed the BJP on certain social media metrics. It is reported that the party's Instagram page alone had garnered over 10 million followers, whereas the BJP currently stands at approximately 8.7 million followers on the same platform.
"What We Feared Has Come to Pass"
Reacting to the ban, the party's founder, Abhijit Dipke, accused authorities of deliberately targeting the movement. In a video posted on Instagram, he stated: “Exactly what we feared would happen, has happened.”
Dipke claimed that attempts to hack this account had been made previously as well; when those failed, the account was ultimately banned. He further alleged that the party had done nothing wrong, but was merely raising questions on behalf of unemployed youth.
In the video, he remarked, “Our account was banned without any explanation. What exactly did we post that was objectionable? We were simply demanding accountability from the government.”
An Appeal to Youth for Protest
Dipke also appealed to young people across the country to raise their voices against this action. According to him, the suspension of the account is not merely about a single social media page, but rather about stifling online criticism.
He raised the question of whether a democracy permits its citizens to ask uncomfortable questions, and urged his supporters to continue speaking out.
Political Pressure or Legal Action?
According to Dipke and many supporters of this movement, the account may have been targeted because the party was running a highly aggressive online campaign regarding the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak controversy. It is reported that the movement had demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, and this campaign was gaining significant popularity among students and young voters.
Meanwhile, ‘X’ has indicated that access to this account was withheld in India following a legal request received from the Government of India or relevant authorities. Under India’s Information Technology (IT) Act, the government possesses the authority to restrict such accounts or content deemed sensitive from the perspective of law and order or public administration.\
However, no detailed public explanation regarding the specific reasons behind this action has been provided thus far.
