Sirsa: Savita Punia, the Indian women's hockey team goalkeeper—known as 'The Great Wall of India'—arrived at her ancestral village, Jodhkan, on Thursday following her Padma Shri award. She was welcomed by her mother, Leelavati, who performed the traditional tilak ceremony.

Savita expressed disappointment that the district administration, village panchayat, and public representatives did not organize a civic reception for her. She remarked that it was disheartening not to be honored for this achievement, despite having brought glory to the country, state, district, and her village.

Recently, President Droupadi Murmu honored her with the Padma Shri for her outstanding contribution to the field of sports. Prior to this, Savita had received several accolades, including the Arjuna Award and the Bhim Award.

In a special conversation, Savita stated that her family derives the greatest joy from any honor she receives, as their constant support has been the driving force behind her success. She praised the government's initiative to include athletes in national honors like the Padma Shri, noting that it serves as an inspiration for sportspeople.

Savita mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi takes a keen interest in promoting sports. Recently, the players received congratulations from the Prime Minister after winning a national cup. She urged the youth to engage in sports in large numbers.

Speaking about upcoming competitions, Savita noted that the Women's Hockey World Cup-2026 is scheduled for August, followed by the Asian Games in September-October. The team's preparations are in full swing; a training camp will begin in Bengaluru on June 28 to finalize preparations. She emphasized the importance of playing against top-tier teams to ensure a strong performance at the international level.
