National Honor for Yogi Government’s Green Energy Policy; UP Named ‘Wind Procurement Champion’, what are govt's future plans?
Lucknow: Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Uttar Pradesh is consistently setting new benchmarks in the clean and green energy sector. In this context, the state has been honored with the prestigious ‘Wind Procurement Champion’ award by the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. This honor was conferred during the national-level ‘Global Wind Day-2026’ event held in Goa.
According to energy experts, this achievement stands as a testament to the Yogi government's visionary energy policy and its commitment to promoting clean energy within the state. Although Uttar Pradesh has limited natural potential for wind energy generation, the state has set a new standard by procuring large quantities of green power from other wind-energy-producing states.
UP has so far signed long-term contracts
Through the Solar Energy Corporation of India and the Power Trading Corporation, UP has so far signed long-term contracts for approximately 5,805 MW of wind energy capacity. Projects accounting for nearly 1,630 MW of this capacity are already operational, and the electricity generated from them is being supplied to consumers.
The state government is working rapidly towards meeting the Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) targets set for 2030. Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited has formulated a plan to procure an additional 5,000 MW of wind energy.
According to Energy Department officials, a major strength of wind energy is its availability in substantial quantities even during the summer months when electricity demand peaks. It plays a crucial role in balancing the power supply, particularly during the evening and night hours when solar energy is unavailable. Consequently, it is emerging as an effective tool for strengthening energy security.
Energy Minister Arvind Kumar Sharma attributed this honor to the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the visionary approach of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the effective energy policy, and the government's commitment to clean energy.
UP moving rapidly towards meeting its ever-increasing energy needs
He stated that UP is moving rapidly towards meeting its ever-increasing energy needs in an environmentally friendly manner. Deepak Raizada, Director (Corporate Planning) of UPPCL, received the award from Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi at a ceremony held in Goa. Union Minister of State Shripad Yesso Naik and senior officials from various states were also present at the event.
Dr. Ashish Kumar Goel, Additional Chief Secretary (Energy) and Chairman of the energy corporations, stated that the ‘Wind Procurement Champion’ honor is a matter of pride for Uttar Pradesh and reflects the state government's commitment to clean and green energy.
UPPCL affirmed its commitment to making Uttar Pradesh a leading state in green energy by further increasing renewable energy procurement in the future.
