Women's T20 World Cup 2026: Coach Amol Muzumdar tells why Indian team lost
Indian women's cricket team coach Amol Muzumdar has stated that his team needs to alter its strategy for the T20 format. India last reached the semi-finals of the Women's T20 World Cup in 2023.
According to the ICC, he made these remarks after the Indian team failed to qualify for the knockout stage of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup.
Following a six-wicket defeat against Australia at Lord's on Sunday, India missed out on reaching the tournament's knockout stage for the second consecutive time.
Amol Muzumdar believes that if India is to match top T20 teams like Australia, it needs to make some changes to its strategy.
He said, "I think we need to rethink our T20 strategy. We need to work seriously on the combinations we play with."
India needs to improve in bowling and fielding
When asked what changes India needs in T20 cricket, Amol Muzumdar emphasized the immediate need for improvement in bowling and fielding.
He said, "As for batting, I think we are batting with plenty of intent. Our mindset has been positive. We are looking to hit fours and sixes. That is crucial in modern cricket, and I believe T20 cricket is essentially a game of fours and sixes. That is why our mindset and our style of play have reflected that."
He further added, "But I feel our bowling needs to step up a notch as well. To be honest, the bowling and fielding didn't help our cause. So, we need to go back and reflect on what our approach in T20 cricket will be and how we can move forward with a positive mindset."
India's bowling attack is currently young
Majumdar noted that India's bowling attack is currently young and lacks experience. Both Sri Charani—the top-ranked bowler in T20 Internationals—and fast bowler Kranti Gaur are under the age of 23.
The coach also highlighted the significance of spinner Shreyanka Patil's absence; she missed the crucial match against Australia due to an injury sustained during the tournament.
He said, "If you look at our bowling attack, it has been quite inexperienced in terms of international exposure. I have mentioned this in press conferences before: give us 18 months, and this bowling attack will look completely different."
