How Lakhanpur Will Become Jammu & Kashmir's New Culinary Gateway under PM SVANidhi Scheme
Lakhanpur, the gateway to Jammu & Kashmir, is poised for rapid development following approval to establish a modern 'street food hub' under the Government of India's PM SVANidhi scheme. Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh announced the project, describing it as a significant step towards boosting tourism, improving livelihoods, and showcasing the region's rich culinary culture.
Expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Dr. Singh stated that Lakhanpur's selection as one of the initial cities to receive approval for this scheme reflects the Central Government's sustained focus on the development of Jammu & Kashmir. He noted that the project comes at a crucial time, as thousands of pilgrims are passing through the area during the ongoing Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra. The new food hub is expected to provide clean, organized, and convenient dining facilities for pilgrims, tourists, and other travelers visiting the Union Territory.
Proposed hub will be developed at two locations
The proposed hub will be developed at two locations within the Lakhanpur market—near the old bus stand and the Sales Tax Office. Spanning an area of 1,754.25 square meters, the hub will feature modern vending infrastructure and promote authentic Dogra cuisine and other local delicacies in a hygienic, tourist-friendly environment.
50 street food hubs are set to be established at major tourism sites
Under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, up to 50 street food hubs are set to be established at major tourism and heritage sites across the country. Each approved project will receive financial assistance of Rs 4 crore in three phases, with additional incentives for cities that have notified their street vending plans.
The scheme also provides technical support through urban planning institutions and is being implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
Far more than just a place to eat and drink, the Lakhanpur Street Food Hub is expected to transform the town from a mere transit stop into a vibrant culinary attraction. By creating better opportunities for local street vendors and entrepreneurs while simultaneously enhancing the tourist experience, the project aims to strengthen the region's tourism economy and celebrate the unique flavors of Jammu and Kashmir.
