Mirabai Chanu secures India's first Gold at 2026 Commonwealth Games, PM Modi greets
Mirabai Chanu has secured India's first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. She won gold in the women's 48 kg weightlifting competition by lifting a total of 190 kg (85 kg snatch + 105 kg clean and jerk), setting a new Commonwealth Games record in the process.
This marks Mirabai's third consecutive Commonwealth gold; she had previously won gold at the 2018 Gold Coast and 2022 Birmingham Games.
India's medal tally now stands at four (1 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze). Earlier on Sunday, Rishikant Singh won a silver medal in the men's 60 kg category by lifting 264 kg (121+143), and Raja Muthupandi won silver in the men's 65 kg category by lifting 289 kg.
Meanwhile, on Friday, Jhandu Kumar had secured India's first medal by winning bronze in para-powerlifting.
India has now moved up to the seventh spot in the medal tally. Australia remains at the top with 24 medals, including 12 golds.
Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Mirabai failed to lift 82 kg in her first snatch attempt. She subsequently lifted 82 kg in her second attempt and 85 kg in her third, setting a Commonwealth record. Later, despite missing her first attempt in the clean and jerk, she lifted 105 kg in her second attempt to clinch the gold.
PM Modi congratulates Mirabai Chanu
Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has congratulated weightlifter Mirabai Chanu on winning the Gold medal in the 48 kg category at the Commonwealth Games 2026.
The Prime Minister said that Mirabai Chanu once again showcased her skills with a stunning performance. Shri Modi noted that with back-to-back Commonwealth Games Gold medals and an overall fourth Commonwealth Games medal to her name, she remains an inspiration for every Indian.
The Prime Minister extended his best wishes to her for her future endeavours.

PM expresses pride in Rishikanta for winning Silver
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his pride in Indian lifter Rishikanta Singh Chanambam for winning a Silver Medal and also achieving his personal best. PM Modi stated that his determination and outstanding performance have brought immense joy to the nation.
Modi wished that he may continue to scale greater heights and inspire many young athletes, conveying best wishes for his future endeavours.
