Tiger Population in Madhya Pradesh Expected to Cross 1,000 in New Census: CM Mohan Yadav
Madhya Pradesh CM Dr. Mohan Yadav said that Indian culture embodies a deep sense of compassion and respect for nature and all wildlife. He said that different animals are associated with the vehicles of Hindu deities, and the tiger, the king of the jungle, is the vehicle of Goddess Durga, symbolising strength.
CM said Madhya Pradesh has undertaken several significant initiatives for the conservation of tigers, cheetahs, gharials, elephants, wild buffaloes and other wildlife. As a result, the tiger population in the state has been increasing steadily, helping Madhya Pradesh retain its status as the Tiger State.
CM said that 53 years ago, the tiger population in the state had fallen to double digits. By 2016, the number had risen to around 250, and the 2022 census recorded 785 tigers. He expressed confidence that the next census would record more than 1,000 tigers. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi's guidance for the continued progress in preserving Madhya Pradesh's rich biodiversity. Dr. Yadav was addressing the state-level International Tiger Day programme at the Kushabhau Thakre Auditorium.
CM visits exhibition
Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav inaugurated the programme by lighting the ceremonial lamp. He also inaugurated and visited an exhibition showcasing wildlife conservation activities and dedicated newly acquired vehicles for wildlife protection. School and college students presented a dance drama focused on tiger conservation.
CM released several publications
The Chief Minister released several departmental publications, including 'Fluttering Jewels of Satpura', a book on butterflies of Satpura, 'Pictorial Herbarium of Kanha Grasses', a book on grass species of the Kanha region, 'Wildlife Rescue Compilation, Best Practices of Wildlife Conservation in Madhya Pradesh', and 'Biodiversity of Wild Mushrooms in Pench Tiger Reserve'. He also unveiled the logos of Ratapani Tiger Reserve and Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve.
