Handloom Haat Opens at Janpath, Offering an Immersive Journey into India’s Living Handloom Traditions, an experience that transcends mere shopping
Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh inaugurated the 'Handloom Haat: The Handloom Experience Centre' at Janpath, New Delhi, on 14 August. This is the first centre of its kind to bring together India’s handloom traditions, modern design, knowledge, enterprise, and retail under one roof.
The Minister also unveiled the official logo of 'Handloom Haat' in the presence of Textiles Secretary Smt. Neelam Shami Rao and Development Commissioner (Handlooms) Dr. M. Beena.
'Handloom Haat' has been conceived as more than just a marketplace; it is a space where visitors can experience the many stories of Indian handloom.
Each floor showcases a distinct facet of the country's textile heritage—ranging from the artistry of master weavers and rare historical textiles to modern design collaborations, sustainable materials, and a thoughtfully curated retail experience. This experience encourages visitors to look beyond the finished garment and discover the people, traditions, and ideas shaping India’s handloom sector.
Inaugural event featured an exhibition by NHDC
This vision was reflected in the inaugural event, which featured an exhibition by the National Handloom Development Corporation (NHDC) showcasing 24 award-winning weavers, alongside the participation of over 30 brands in 'Weave The Future 5.0'.
Event demonstrated how Indian handloom is evolving
By bringing together weavers, designers, brands, researchers, and artisans, the event demonstrated how Indian handloom is evolving through collaboration, innovation, and sustainability. Visitors viewed textiles crafted from indigenous fibers and regenerative materials, while spectacular installations highlighted the interconnections between India’s geography, environment, agriculture, and textile traditions.
Giriraj Singh spent time interacting with weavers, artisans, and designers, discussing their weaving techniques, regional traditions, and modern innovations. As he toured the retail areas and exhibitions, he experienced the diversity of India’s handloom heritage and the creativity that keeps it relevant in today’s market.
Speaking on the occasion, the Union Minister remarked, "The Handloom Haat will generate greater recognition and market opportunities for weavers and handloom enterprises."
A Multi-Layered Handloom Experience
The 'Handloom Haat' experience unfolds gradually, with each floor offering visitors a distinct glimpse into India’s handloom ecosystem.
Reimagining Odisha Weaves
The ground floor hosts an exhibition titled "Reimagining Odisha Weaves: Cloth, Craft, Creativity, Community," curated by 'Vriksh Designs.' This exhibition demonstrates how collaboration between designers and master weavers can breathe new life into traditional weaving methods. Alongside lesser-known traditions like Ganjam Bomkai and Dhalapathar tapestry, the exhibition showcases experiments with Ikat, Jala, and Phoda weaving, natural dyes, contemporary color palettes, textures, and product innovation.
Vishwakarma Gallery
On the first floor, the 'Vishwakarma Gallery' offers a serene and contemplative experience. Showcasing exquisite textiles from the renowned Vishwakarma exhibition series (1981–1991), this gallery highlights magnificent creations created from the collaboration between Weaver Service Centres and weaving communities across the country. It also pays tribute to 'Sant Kabir Award' and 'Padma Shri' recipients whose contributions have been instrumental in preserving and advancing India's handloom traditions.
Design Conclave
On the second floor, the focus shifts to dialogue and imagination through a 'Design Conclave' and a stunning installation inspired by India's forests. Drawing motifs from the animal, avian, and floral designs found in handloom traditions nationwide, this installation reminds visitors of the profound bond between nature, culture, and the art of textile weaving.
