MP: ‘Nirmal Evam Aviral Maa’ Mission formed for long-term sustainable management of sacred Narmada; how it will function?
Madhya Pradesh CM Dr. Mohan Yadav chaired the Cabinet meeting held at the Mantralaya on Tuesday. The Cabinet approved the formation of the ‘Nirmal Evam Aviral Maa Narmada (NAMAN) Mission for the conservation, rejuvenation and long-term sustainable management of the sacred Narmada, the lifeline and backbone of the State’s economy.
Nearly 33% of the State’s population is directly or indirectly dependent on the Narmada and its catchment area. Keeping this in view, the mission has been designed as an integrated, scientific and multi-departmental institutional mechanism.
The NAMAN Mission will be registered as an autonomous organisation under the Madhya Pradesh Society Registration Adhiniyam, 1973. The administrative structure of the NAMAN Mission will have three levels.
Strong Financial Framework for the Mission
A robust financial framework has been established for the smooth functioning of the mission and implementation of its projects. Under the ‘Nirmal Evam Aviral Narmada Mission Fund’, Rs 100 crore will be provided annually from the State grant for Narmada conservation and development works. In addition, Rs 100 crore annually will be utilised from the Forest Department’s CAMPA fund.

In exceptional circumstances, Rs 100 crore will be made available from the State budget over five years for works outside the scope of existing schemes. The mission will also mobilise public participation through CSR funds, Central assistance and the PPP model.
Project Management Unit to Undertake Scientific Assessment
The Project Management Unit (PMU) will be established for technical expertise. The PMU will function as a technology engine and innovation hub. It will use modern systems such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), data analytics, GIS, remote sensing, Decision Support Systems (DSS) and climate change modelling to scientifically assess the river health.
