Odisha's Grand Vision: How Chilika, Kalijai, and Satapada will be Transformed into World-Class Tourist Destinations
The Odisha government has devised a major plan to transform Chilika Lake, the Maa Kalijai Temple, and Satapada into world-class tourist destinations. Simultaneously, the region's delicate ecosystem and natural beauty will be preserved.
This decision was taken during a high-level review meeting held in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday. The meeting was chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida and attended by Law, Works, and Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan.
As Asia's largest saltwater lake (lagoon) and a globally renowned Ramsar wetland, Chilika is already one of Odisha's premier attractions. The government now aims to further boost its popularity through improved infrastructure, enhanced visitor experiences, and sustainable tourism practices.
Chilika, Kalijai, and Satapada are interconnected major tourist destinations in Odisha. Chilika Lake is Asia's largest brackish water lagoon; Kalijai is a famous island temple situated within the lake; and Satapada is the area where the lake meets the Bay of Bengal and where dolphins can be spotted.
Parida stated that the focus would be on creating modern tourism facilities without harming the lake's rich biodiversity. She also emphasized the comprehensive development of the Maa Kalijai Temple, one of Odisha's most significant pilgrimage sites.
Focus on Eco-friendly Development
The proposed master plan includes improved roads, modern jetties, parking facilities, bird-watching points, cycling tracks, water sports, trekking trails, tree-houses, open-air dining spaces, and public art showcasing Odisha's cultural heritage.
Harichandan said that better road connectivity—including a proposed new road linking Gopalpur and Bahuda—would facilitate easier access to the area, providing a significant boost to tourism and the local economy.
By combining world-class amenities with environmental conservation, the Odisha government hopes that Chilika and its surrounding attractions will become must-visit destinations for tourists from across the country and abroad.
