Astro Village Project Taking Shape in Six Madhya Pradesh Villages in Dhar, Chhindwara, Betul, Narmadapuram, Damoh, and Umaria
Madhya Pradesh is adding a new attraction to its tourism map: astro-tourism. Already renowned for its forests, wildlife, and historical sites, the state is now inviting tourists to witness the beauty of the night sky. Through the 'Astro Village Development Project,' visitors will soon be able to enjoy spectacular views of stars, planets, and even the Milky Way from some of the darkest locations in the state.
Six Villages Selected for the First Phase
Launched under the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board's 'Tribal Tourism Project,' this initiative has selected one village each from six districts—Dhar, Chhindwara, Betul, Narmadapuram, Damoh, and Umaria.
The selected villages are Gyanpura, Dhusawani, Bancha, Dhaba, Richhakudi, and Rancha. These villages are being developed into astro-tourism destinations equipped with modern amenities for tourists.
An Ideal Spot for Stargazing
These villages are situated in naturally dark locations with minimal light pollution, making them perfect for stargazing. Tourists will be able to enjoy clear views of stars, planets, constellations, and the Milky Way—an experience that is becoming increasingly rare in bustling cities.
To enhance the experience, modern telescopes, binoculars, and astro-photography cameras will be provided in the villages. Dedicated platforms and observation areas for stargazing will also be constructed. Interpretation centers will help tourists understand space, celestial events, and astronomy through accessible and interactive displays.
Local Youth to Become Astro-Guides
The most exciting aspect of this project is its focus on creating employment for local communities. Youth from the selected villages will undergo 90 days of professional training to become certified astro-guides.
These guides will assist tourists in identifying stars, constellations, and planets, while also sharing fascinating insights about the night sky. This initiative will generate new employment opportunities and ensure that local communities derive direct benefits from tourism.
A New Identity for Madhya Pradesh
The 'Astro Village Development Project' is expected to add a new chapter to Madhya Pradesh's tourism journey. By combining science, nature, and rural tourism, the state aims to attract tourists from across India and the globe.
