Bhopal: Handloom Expo at Gauhar Mahal Showcases India's Vibrant Diversity
Visitors to Bhopal's Gauhar Mahal can currently explore a wide range of handloom products from across India. Traditional weaves, fabrics, and regional designs are all available under one roof.
This state-level handloom expo features around 50 to 65 weavers and artisans from 16 states. A major attraction for visitors is the sheer variety of products—ranging from sarees and shawls to dress materials, traditional fabrics, handmade carpets, and home decor items.
A highlight of the expo is the Jammu & Kashmir section, where visitors can view traditional pherans, Pashmina shawls, Georgette kurtis, and other dress materials. Cotton 'Kani' sarees, crafted using the traditional 'Kani' weaving technique, are also among the displayed items.
The West Bengal stall offers Baluchari sarees, renowned for the intricate weaving and traditional designs on their borders and pallus.
Visitors can also explore Kosa and Tussar products from Chhattisgarh, intricately patterned Patola sarees from Gujarat, and Mysore silk from Karnataka—famous for its soft texture and lustrous sheen.
For those interested in Madhya Pradesh's traditional weaving, the expo features products from Chanderi and Maheshwar. Their lightweight fabric, fine texture, and traditional designs make them another key attraction.
Another interesting section showcases handmade carpets from Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh. Made from a blend of 80% wool and 20% cotton, these carpets are both warm and durable.
The expo also offers visitors a chance to compare the weaving styles, colors, textures, and designs associated with different regions of India. Instead of viewing handloom merely as clothing, people can gain a closer look at the craftsmanship and local traditions behind each product.
