Bodh Gaya Looks Beyond Buddhism: How the Holy Site in Bihar Is Embracing Eco-Tourism
Bodh Gaya: Renowned globally as the site where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment, Bodh Gaya in Bihar is now preparing to offer tourists much more than just its famous spiritual landmarks. The Bihar government is working to develop the city into an eco-tourism destination that integrates its Buddhist heritage with natural attractions such as lakes, hills, and lush green landscapes.
While the Mahabodhi Temple and the sacred Bodhi Tree remain the primary attractions, officials believe that Bodh Gaya’s natural environment can also draw tourists seeking peace, relaxation, and a connection with nature.
A key attraction is Maya Sarovar, a lake spanning approximately five acres that has been developed into a green tourism destination. Beautiful landscaping, a laser show depicting the life of Lord Buddha, and a serene atmosphere have made it a popular spot for families as well as domestic and international tourists.
Other sites—such as Muchalinda Lake, Sujata Stupa, Dungeshwari, and the surrounding hills—are also being promoted as part of the eco-tourism circuit. According to Tourism Department sources, these locations offer opportunities for activities like nature walks, birdwatching, and trekking, while also fostering environmental conservation and greater local community participation.
Officials stated that Bihar's tourism policy focuses on sustainable and responsible tourism. Plans include eco-friendly accommodation, nature camps, and visitor interpretation centers designed to help tourists understand the region's biodiversity and cultural heritage while raising environmental awareness.
The government believes that combining Buddhist tourism with eco-tourism will encourage visitors to spend more time in Bodh Gaya, rather than limiting their visit to a brief pilgrimage. Extended stays are expected to benefit local businesses, particularly artisans, handloom weavers, and handicraft makers.
This initiative is also expected to generate employment for local residents in sectors such as tourist guiding, hospitality, transportation, and other tourism-related services.
According to officials, the aim is to develop a tourism model that preserves Bodh Gaya's spiritual identity and natural beauty while creating new economic opportunities for local communities. They state that this approach will help safeguard the area's unique cultural and environmental heritage for future generations and foster sustainable growth in Bihar's tourism sector.
