Dronathon-2026: IAF’s Drone Challenge Gives Indian Innovators a Chance to Shape Future Defence Capabilities
The launch of 'Dronathon-2026' by the Indian Air Force (IAF) at the Pokhran Field Firing Range in Rajasthan has provided a significant boost to India's growing drone industry. More than 20 defence companies, startups, MSMEs, public sector units, and innovators are participating in this three-day event. They are showcasing advanced drone technologies that could play a pivotal role in strengthening the nation's defence capabilities.
The event was inaugurated on September 14 by Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, Vice Chief of the Air Staff. Senior officials from the Ministry of Defence, Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff, the Indian Army, and the Border Security Force (BSF) were also present on the occasion.
Companies tcan test their UAS in real-world operational conditions
Unlike a standard technology exhibition, 'Dronathon-2026' offers Indian companies the opportunity to test their Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) in real-world operational conditions. The IAF is evaluating how these systems perform under challenging circumstances. This will help identify technologies that can be effectively utilized during military operations.
The demonstrations feature surveillance and reconnaissance drones, autonomous systems, drone swarms, electronic warfare technologies, and counter-drone systems designed to detect and neutralize hostile or unauthorized drones. The objective is to ensure that the technologies are not only innovative but also reliable and ready for real-world deployment.
On the opening day, the IAF also released its UAS roadmap. This document outlines the future capability requirements for Unmanned Aircraft Systems. It is expected that this roadmap will assist Indian industries, research institutions, and academic organizations in focusing their innovation efforts on technologies required by the Air Force.
Successful demonstration of 'Vayu UTtaM
A highlight of this program was the successful demonstration of 'Vayu UTtaM,' an indigenously developed multi-mode unmanned traffic management system. This system tracked both military and civilian drones in real-time. It is designed to safely manage drone operations, particularly in increasingly congested airspace, and can also assist in identifying and rapidly responding to hazardous or unauthorized drones.
Beyond military applications, 'Vayu UTtaM' has the potential to enhance public safety, protect critical infrastructure, and support civil aviation—capabilities that are increasingly relevant given the rising use of drones across the country.
IAF encouraging Indian innovators to develop indigenous technologies
Through 'Dronathon-2026,' the Indian Air Force is encouraging Indian innovators to develop indigenous technologies under the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India) initiative. The scope extends beyond just drones to encompass the entire ecosystem, including sensors, communication systems, propulsion, electronic warfare, autonomous technologies, and airspace management. This is creating new opportunities for India's defense manufacturing sector and technology start-ups.
