Green Mobility Revolution in MP: 1,100 New e-Buses to Join State Fleet by 2027
The final session on the first day of the two-day Yaatri Parivahan Vision Summit-2026 in Indore focused on “Green Mobility: Clean Fuels and a Future-Ready Bus Fleet.” The special technical session held detailed discussions on environment-friendly public transport and sustainable development, with an emphasis on making the system modern, safe, inclusive and financially sustainable.
Four key pillars of green mobility were identified during the session: developing a future-ready fleet prioritising safety, accessibility and passenger convenience; maximising the use of e-buses and low-carbon fuels; promoting private participation through the PPP model supported by progressive policies and a transparent regulatory framework; and modernising conventional depots into advanced mobility hubs.
At present, 96 PM e-buses and 120 intercity buses are operational in the state. As part of the planned expansion, 486 new PM e-buses and 34 new intercity buses will be added over the next six months, with a target of increasing the fleet to 1,100 buses by 2027.
To support the expanded fleet, nine new state-of-the-art depots, each with a capacity of 100 buses, will be developed over the next six months in addition to the existing seven depots. The expansion is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 70,000 tonnes annually while lowering operational and maintenance costs.
An RFP for an Intelligent Transport Management System (ITMS) will also be issued shortly to ensure transparent, real-time management across the state. Senior Vice President, CNG, Think Gas, Shri Rana Dutta, said CNG is currently a highly affordable and practical fuel option.
Additional Chief Executive Officer, HCBSL, Haryana, Shri Ashok Kumar Bansal, shared his experience of operating electric buses and said that robust charging infrastructure, efficient battery management systems and complete transparency in state subsidies and PPP models are essential for successful and sustainable e-bus operations.
