Heavy rains trigger landslide in Sikkim; 20 houses washed away; several states facing havoc of floods and downpours; see IMD alerts
A landslide occurred on Thursday night in Rimbhi village, Gyalshing district, Sikkim, due to continuous rainfall, washing away over 20 houses and government quarters. Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties so far.
Although Cyclone 'Arnab', which formed over the Bay of Bengal, has weakened, its impact is still being felt across Eastern and Central India. Heavy rainfall has heightened the risk of flash floods and landslides, particularly in Odisha. As a precautionary measure, approximately 10,000 people residing in low-lying and landslide-prone areas across the state's southern and western districts have been relocated to 200 relief camps. In total, nine states have been affected by this cyclone.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for very heavy rainfall in Chhattisgarh, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Telangana over the next 24 hours. These regions are also likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds blowing at speeds of 50–60 kmph.
Orange Alert in MP
In Madhya Pradesh, an 'Orange Alert' for very heavy rainfall has been issued for 13 districts, including Jabalpur, due to active weather conditions. Heavy rain is also forecast for another 16 districts.
A 'Yellow Alert' is in place for Bihar, with rain expected in 19 districts. Meanwhile, rainfall is likely in six districts of Haryana, including Yamunanagar, Karnal, and Panipat.
The monsoon has also become active again in Uttar Pradesh. Since Friday morning, rainfall has been reported in approximately 20 cities, including Lucknow, Kanpur, Unnao, Varanasi, Prayagraj, and Jaunpur. Lucknow has been experiencing rain accompanied by strong winds since Thursday evening.
