How Mizoram’s Railway Lifeline Transformed Travel, Tourism and Logistics in One Year, Opening New Horizons for the Hill State
The inauguration of the 51.38-km-long Bairabi-Sairang railway line and the Sairang railway station by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 13, 2025, marked a historic moment for Mizoram. For the first time, the state capital region was connected to India's railway network, making travel faster, safer, and more reliable for thousands of people.
Constructed amidst Mizoram's challenging hilly terrain—featuring 153 bridges and 45 tunnels—this railway line has turned a long-cherished dream into reality. It has reduced reliance on road transport and improved access to education, healthcare, employment, and markets.
In just one year, this railway has become an integral part of daily life. More than 15 lakh passengers have traveled on trains connecting Sairang to Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, and Silchar. Over 1,100 train trips have been completed, consistently witnessing high demand.
Sairang railway station alone has handled the movement of over 554,000 passengers, welcoming approximately 3,300 travelers daily. For many families, students, and patients, rail travel has made long-distance journeys affordable, comfortable, and reliable.
The railway has also transformed the movement of goods. Just a day after the line's inauguration, the first freight train arrived in Sairang carrying cement, helping to lower transportation costs. Since then, over 2,500 freight wagons have delivered construction materials, food grains, fertilizers, and automobiles. These supplies have aided infrastructure development, increased the availability of essential items, and reduced logistics costs for businesses and consumers.
The benefits extend beyond just transportation. Improved connectivity has led to an 86% increase in tourism, creating new opportunities for hotels, homestays, restaurants, taxi operators, guides, and local entrepreneurs. It has also become easier for students to travel to universities, coaching centers, and examination venues across the country.
The railway is also opening up national markets for Mizoram's unique products. The first parcel booked from Sairang contained Anthurium flowers sent to Delhi, demonstrating how local farmers, artisans, and small businesses can now easily reach customers across India.
Over the past year, the Bairabi-Sairang railway has connected more than just places—it has connected people to opportunities. By bringing ease of travel, affordability, and reliable access into daily life, it has strengthened livelihoods, fostered economic growth, and instilled greater confidence among the people of Mizoram regarding a more connected future.
