Madhya Pradesh: Eleven people die in Sagar after consuming illicit liquor, many critical, death toll could rise
Eleven people have died so far in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, after consuming illicit, toxic liquor. Around 35 people were brought to the hospital; some remain in critical condition. They have been referred to Bundelkhand Medical College and the District Hospital in Sagar.
It is reported that residents of Ghughar, Nauraj, Baraj, and surrounding areas consumed liquor on Saturday night. Subsequently, their health deteriorated. Family members rushed them to the hospital, where doctors declared them dead. There is an apprehension that the death toll may rise.
The deceased reportedly belong to four different villages. The administration is investigating the matter and taking further action regarding the deaths caused by liquor consumption.
According to doctors, the patients brought to the hospital showed signs of cyanosis (turning blue) and muscle rigidity. Screening is being conducted in the affected villages following the incident, and those who consumed the liquor are being brought to the hospital for check-ups.
Collector Pratibha Pal has appealed to the public to undergo immediate screening if they have consumed any alcohol in the last 24 to 48 hours or are exhibiting symptoms associated with toxic liquor poisoning. She stated that people could contact local medical teams or visit the Civil Hospital directly for an examination.
The administration has swung into action following the deaths. Six liquor shops in the area have been sealed, and orders have been issued for sample collection. Strict action has also been directed against those involved in the illicit liquor trade.
The Collector stated that medical teams are closely monitoring the situation, and necessary medical and administrative measures are being taken.
Ramkumar Dangi's cousin from Bamurabeda village is also among the deceased in this incident. Ramkumar Dangi stated, "Deaths are occurring due to alcohol consumption. Four people have died in our village."
Ramkumar Dangi said, "Over the past two days, one death occurred on the first day and three on the second. We realized the deaths were linked to alcohol because the three individuals had consumed it together. Their bodies suddenly began to turn cold, and they succumbed within half an hour."
Senior officials visit Nauraj and Googra Khurd
Following the deaths, the Sagar Commissioner, Inspector General (IG), District Collector, and Superintendent of Police (SP) visited the villages of Nauraj and Googra Khurd. The officials met with the affected families and reviewed the medical arrangements for patients admitted to the hospital.
Officials have ordered strict legal action against illegal liquor traders. As a precautionary measure, six shops in the area have been sealed, and immediate sampling of the liquor has been ordered.
The administration has appealed to anyone who has consumed alcohol and is experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, headache, or fever to visit the nearest health center immediately for a check-up as a precaution.
