Tiger arrives at Gwalior's Gandhi Zoological Park from Dehradun; visitors to see the big cat after a 7-10 day quarantine
Gwalior. A tiger exchange is being conducted at Gandhi Zoological Park (Zoo) to prevent potential future genetic diseases and to maintain genetic diversity within the tiger population. Following approval from the Central Zoo Authority, New Delhi, a male yellow tiger has been brought to Gwalior from Dehradun Zoo. In exchange, it is proposed to send a male white tiger from Gandhi Zoological Park, Gwalior, to Dehradun Zoo.
10 tigers at Gandhi Zoological Park
Curator Gaurav Parihar stated that there are currently 10 tigers—comprising 5 males and 5 females—housed at Gandhi Zoological Park. Periodic tiger exchanges are considered essential to maintain genetic diversity and minimize the risk of future genetic disorders within the group.
Acting on the instructions of Municipal Commissioner Abhishek Chaudhary, a team comprising Zoo In-charge Dr. Upendra Singh Yadav, Curator Gaurav Parihar, and Zoo Keeper Shivkumar Pal visited Dehradun Zoo. The team assessed the male tiger's behavior and physical condition before safely transporting it to Gwalior.
Monitoring of health, behavior, and acclimatization
The male tiger was safely transported from Dehradun Zoo to Gandhi Zoological Park, Gwalior, on the morning of September 26, 2026. In accordance with the guidelines set by the Central Zoo Authority, the tiger will initially be kept in quarantine for 7 to 10 days.
During this period, its health, behavior, and acclimatization will be monitored. Once the quarantine period concludes, the process of moving the tiger to an open enclosure for public viewing will be initiated.
