Trump Promises $5,000 'Dividend' to Every Adult American if Republicans Win Congress
US President Donald Trump has announced a bold election promise: every adult American will receive $5,000 (around ₹4.76 lakh) if the Republican Party retains control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the November midterm elections.
Addressing a Republican convention in Dallas, Trump declared, "If the Republican Party wins both the House of Representatives and the Senate, you will get $5,000." He described the proposed payment as the "Trump Dividend," saying it would be a reward for America's "economic strength and success."
Trump added that the money would have to be spent within the United States to boost domestic economic activity. However, he did not explain how the program would be financed, who would qualify, or how the payments would be distributed.
A Trillion-Dollar Price Tag
Economists estimate that providing $5,000 to every adult American would cost the federal government more than $1 trillion, meaning the proposal would require approval from Congress before it could become law.
The announcement comes at a time when the United States is already facing an annual budget deficit of nearly $1.8 trillion, while the country's national debt recently crossed the $40 trillion mark for the first time. Critics argue that such a massive spending plan could further widen the deficit and increase inflationary pressures.
Vance: Wealthy Americans Would Be Excluded
Shortly after Trump's speech, Vice President JD Vance clarified that the proposed dividend would not be paid to wealthy Americans.
Vance suggested that the payments could be funded through tariff revenues collected by the government. However, analysts note that tariff collections are far below the amount required to finance a nationwide $5,000 payout, raising questions about the proposal's financial feasibility.
