UIDAI Aadhaar Face Authentication Becomes Easy: What It Means for the General Public

🎧 Listen to this Article:

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched two new tools—the Aadhaar Face Authentication SDK and a Sandbox—to make Aadhaar verification easier, faster, and more secure. The biggest benefit for the general public is that users will no longer need to install a separate 'FaceRD' app for Aadhaar face authentication.

Previously, users had to switch between different apps to complete Aadhaar verification. With the new system, face authentication can take place directly within banking, insurance, fintech, or other service apps. This translates to a better experience with fewer steps, making it easier to open bank accounts, purchase insurance, activate SIM cards, or avail of government services.

New technology also enhances security

The new technology also enhances security. It uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to verify that a real person is using the app, thereby preventing fraud attempts involving fake photos or videos. Personal data is also encrypted to ensure secure authentication.

For organizations such as banks, government departments, fintech companies, and telecom operators, the new SDK simplifies the integration of Aadhaar face authentication into their mobile apps. The Sandbox provides a secure testing platform where developers can test and refine the system before rolling it out to users.

Faster and easier access to services

For millions of Indians, this means faster and easier access to services that already utilize Aadhaar face authentication. These include pension verification via Jeevan Pramaan, Ayushman Bharat enrollment, Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) schemes, Aadhaar-enabled payments, PM Kisan, PM Awas Yojana, and SIM card e-KYC.

Since its launch in 2021, UIDAI's face authentication system has processed over 500 crore transactions and is being used by approximately 200 organizations across India. This latest upgrade is expected to make digital services more user-friendly, reduce paperwork, and provide citizens with a faster and more secure experience.
