Will Ajit Agarkar quit as BCCI chief selector? Who is the frontrunner to take his place?
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has begun the search for a new chief selector for the senior men's cricket team. Speculation is mounting that the current selection committee chairman, Ajit Agarkar, is set to step down.
Reports suggest that while Agarkar had initially sought an extension of his tenure until the 2027 ODI World Cup, he has now expressed a desire to leave the post once his current term concludes.
It is believed that discussions regarding this matter have already taken place between the BCCI and Agarkar, and an official announcement concerning his departure could be made in the coming days.
Ajit Agarkar is believed to have written to BCCI on Thursday stating his intention to step down from the top job at the end of his term.
In his communication, Agarkar has cited his previous discussions with the board in February, when he had first alerted top decision makers to look for alternatives at the end of his current term,” a BCCI official said. Agarkar’s current tenure ends on October 4.
Parthiv Patel a Frontrunner
According to sources, former Indian cricketer Parthiv Patel is among the leading contenders to replace Ajit Agarkar. Parthiv Patel has represented the Indian team across all three formats—Test, ODI, and T20—and has now emerged as a potential candidate for the role of senior selection committee chairman.
