Modern Rollers Brought from Chennai to Prepare Indore Pitch: City Gears up for India-West Indies T20 Match
Indore: Preparations for the India-West Indies T20 match, scheduled for October 11 at Holkar Stadium, are now being conducted using scientific methods, including the use of modern rollers to prepare the pitch. Rohit Pandit, CEO of the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association, stated that these rollers were brought to Indore from Chennai following BCCI directives.
For the first time, rollers weighing 200, 500, and 750 kilograms are being used on the field. These machines, brought from Chennai, are larger than traditional manual rollers and are designed to distribute weight across the pitch in varied ways.
Rolling Now Based on Pitch Science
This approach reflects growing research into how soil, moisture, grass roots, and rolling pressure influence the cricket pitch and the ball's bounce.
In England, there has been a shift towards preparing pitches using scientific methods rather than relying solely on the personal experience of ground staff. This same approach is now being adopted at Indian cricket grounds. Using this new technology at Holkar Stadium will not only enhance the pitch's structural integrity but also make it easier to manage the impact of sudden weather changes and player movement on the pitch surface. Consequently, pitch preparation is no longer just about using the heaviest roller available.
Moisture Plays a Crucial Role
Simply using a heavy roller does not guarantee a superior pitch. If moisture levels are not as anticipated, applying excessive pressure can compromise the surface quality. Grass roots also play a vital role by absorbing moisture from the soil. Therefore, the pitch is being prepared by striking a balance between soil moisture, grass condition, and surface firmness—bringing sports science directly onto the cricket field.
