PM Modi attends Dussehra-2026 celebrations, performs 'Ravan Dahan' by shooting arrow; President Murmu also participates in festivities
Dussehra-2026: The festival of Vijayadashami is being celebrated with great fervor across the country this Tuesday. On this occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended a Dussehra celebration in Delhi and performed 'Ravan Dahan' (the burning of the effigy of Ravan) by shooting an arrow.
Events such as 'Ramlila' (enactments of the life of Lord Ram), 'Shastra Pujan' (worship of weapons), and 'Ravan Dahan' were organized in various parts of the nation. Vijayadashami is considered a symbol of the victory of good over evil and righteousness over unrighteousness.
Extending his wishes to the nation on the occasion of Vijayadashami, Prime Minister Modi stated that this festival is not merely a celebration, but the very life force of India.
Paying his respects at the feet of Lord Ram, Mother Janaki, and Bajrangbali (Hanuman), he remarked that today, every corner of India is imbued with the spirit of Lord Ram. Through the staging of 'Ramlila' and the tradition of keeping the ideals of Lord Ram alive, a message is conveyed regarding the end of tyranny and terror, and the ultimate triumph of truth.
President Droupadi Murmu, along with others, attended the Dussehra celebration held in Dwarka, Delhi. Across the country, people marked the occasion by burning the effigies of Ravan, Kumbhakarna, and Meghnada, symbolizing a pledge to put an end to evil.
Mohan Bhagwat performs 'Shastra Pujan' in Nagpur
In Nagpur, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief Mohan Bhagwat performed 'Shastra Pujan' on the occasion of Vijayadashami. In his address, he noted that while problems and movements may arise, their primary objective should be to find solutions, rather than seeking votes or cheap popularity. He further emphasized that the conduct of individuals should not lead to the creation of animosity within society.
Vijayadashami being celebrated through diverse traditions
In most parts of North India, Dussehra is being celebrated on October 20, whereas in West Bengal, in accordance with the traditions of Durga Puja, Vijayadashami will be observed on October 21. There are variations in the observance of the festival, depending on dates and local traditions.
The message of Vijayadashami is that positive change in society can be brought about only by following the path of truth, justice, and righteousness. The tradition of 'Ravan Dahan' (the burning of the effigy of Ravana) provides an opportunity to reaffirm this commitment.
