Rising Animal Feed Costs Hit Farmers, Will Milk, Egg and Chicken Prices Increase?

🎧 Listen to this Article:

Rising animal feed costs are putting poultry and dairy farmers under growing financial pressure, with prices of key raw materials increasing by as much as 75%. Poultry farmers are reportedly facing losses of around 15%, while dairy farmers in drought-affected areas are struggling to arrange sufficient fodder for their cattle.

Feed is one of the biggest expenses in poultry and dairy farming. However, despite higher production costs, weak market demand is preventing farmers and companies from raising the prices of chicken, eggs, milk and other products proportionately. This is squeezing profit margins and making it difficult for small farmers to sustain their businesses.

Competition for Maize Pushes Up Costs

One of the major reasons behind rising feed prices is increased competition for maize between poultry feed manufacturers and ethanol producers. Reduced rainfall has affected maize production, tightening supplies and intensifying competition among buyers.

Industry organisations have urged the government to facilitate maize imports to ease the pressure on prices. They have also suggested using grains that are unfit for people to eat as animal feed, as long as they are safe for animals.

Drought Adds to Dairy Farmers' Woes

Drought conditions have made fodder more expensive and difficult to obtain in several areas. Farmers need adequate supplies of green fodder, dry fodder and nutritious feed to maintain cattle health and milk production. Higher expenses, coupled with weak demand for dairy products, are further reducing their earnings.

Consumers May Feel the Impact

If feed costs remain high, production expenses for milk, eggs and chicken could rise further. However, the extent of any increase in retail prices will depend on supply, demand and market conditions.

For now, farmers are bearing much of the additional cost, raising concerns about the financial sustainability of small poultry and dairy operations.
