Kiwi fruit grown in the high-altitude region of 'Ziro' in Arunachal Pradesh has now reached international markets. A trial shipment of 1.5 metric tonnes of these kiwis has been successfully delivered to Dubai (UAE). With the support of the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), this consignment was showcased at the LuLu Hypermarket in Al Qusais, Dubai.

Initiated under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), this project aims to promote Arunachal Pradesh's kiwis—highlighting them as a unique specialty of the state—and to explore new opportunities in foreign markets.

The project is being implemented in collaboration with the state’s Department of Trade and Commerce and the Department of Horticulture. Its objective is to connect local farmers with international buyers and create new marketing avenues for them.

Future Exports to Depend on Customer Feedback

The favorable, hilly environment of Arunachal Pradesh imparts a distinct quality and flavor to the kiwis grown there. The region primarily produces the Hayward, Monty, Allison, and Bruno varieties, with the 'Hayward' variety being in high demand in international markets.

Showcasing these kiwis in a Dubai retail store will help in understanding customer preferences—such as their taste preferences, quality expectations, and specific requirements regarding packaging and presentation. The feedback received from this initiative will prove valuable for future commercial exports, helping both farmers and exporters better understand the requirements of foreign markets.

An excellent opportunity for kiwi farmers to expand into export markets

The event marking the dispatch of this consignment was attended by Gabriel D. Wangsu, Minister of Agriculture and Allied Departments, Arunachal Pradesh; Dr. Mahesh Chai, MLA and Advisor to the Minister of Trade and Commerce; Heje Appa, MLA for Ziro; Rishita Gupta, Special Secretary; Bullo Mamu, Secretary of Trade and Commerce; Koj Rinya, Secretary of Horticulture; and Kadirvel Govindasamy, Director of ICAR, Shillong.

Additionally, representatives from the 'Kiwi Growers Cooperative Society', members of 'Fair Exports India Pvt. Ltd.', officials from APEDA, and local farmers were also present at the event.

This successful shipment of kiwis presents an excellent opportunity for kiwi farmers in the Northeast to expand into export markets and increase their income.
