Pune Metro set for major expansion; PM Modi to inaugurate 23 km-long 'Pink Line' and launch 'Phase-II' projects
Pune’s urban transport is set for a major transformation. On November 3, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for metro projects worth approximately ₹21,800 crore. These projects will significantly improve connectivity in this rapidly expanding city, providing major relief to thousands of daily commuters.
PM Modi will inaugurate the 23 km-long Pune Metro Line-3, known as the 'Pink Line,' which has been constructed at a cost of over ₹8,300 crore. Connecting 'Maan' to the 'District Court' station, this corridor will provide a direct metro link between the Hinjawadi IT hub and Shivajinagar, making daily travel easier for IT professionals and other commuters.
This new line will also integrate with the existing metro network, enhancing access to commercial and residential areas. Furthermore, it is expected to reduce road congestion, decrease reliance on private vehicles, and lower vehicular pollution.
Entire 'Pink Line' will be operated by women
In a significant move toward gender inclusivity in public transport, the entire 'Pink Line' will be operated by female train operators. The project also places a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability, with approximately 30% of its electricity requirements to be met through solar energy.
'Phase-II' to connect more development hubs
PM Modi will also lay the foundation stone for 'Phase-II' of the Pune Metro, which has an estimated cost of approximately ₹13,500 crore. This will include four corridors—Lines 2A, 2B, 4, and 4A—with a total length of over 44 km.
Line 2A will connect Vanaz to Chandni Chowk, while Line 2B will connect Ramwadi to Vitthalwadi. The 25.52 km-long Line 4 will connect Kharadi to Khadakwasla, and the 6.12 km-long Line 4A will connect Nal Stop to Manik Baug.
This expanded network will bring key locations—such as Kharadi, Magarpatta, Hadapsar, Swargate, Pune Cantonment, Warje, and Nanded City—under the ambit of improved metro connectivity.
Interchange facilities at Swargate, Nal Stop, and Kharadi Bypass will help integrate the new corridors with the existing metro network and inter-city bus services, further enhancing the connectivity of the public transport system.
The Prime Minister will inaugurate these projects and lay their foundation stones via video conferencing at 12:30 PM.
