The photographer, popularly known as 'Tank Man', has died in Indonesia after taking pictures of a man standing by the way of tanks during a demonstration at Tienanmen Square in China. US officials confirmed the death of 64-year-old Charlie Cole in Bali where he had been living for a long time.
"We express condolences to his family for the damage," said a State Department official. Cole won the World Press Photo Award in 1990 for taking a photo of the man wearing a white shirt with bags in both hands.
There are thousands and hundreds of pictures taken by photographer Charlie Cole. One such photo was taken a day after the death of hundreds of pro-democracy protesters at Beijing's Tienanmen Square. This white shirt man has not been identified till date. The picture of 'Tank Man' is one of the famous photographs of the 20th century. However, this picture is banned in China.
