Muharram means the first month of the year according to the Islamic calendar, and the 10th of this month is very important in Islam. Muslims, especially Shia Muslims, not only mourn the 10th date (Ashura) of Muharram but shed their tears on the martyrdom day of Nawas-e-Rasool (Imam Husain, grandson of Prophet Mohammad) 1400 years ago in the grounds of Karbala. The Matni procession takes place and remembers the story of the oppression done 1400 ago. Today is the 10th date of Muharram in India.

This month is celebrated as the holy month in Islam. This month is an occasion to remember the martyrdom of Hussein Ali, the Nawase of the struggling Hazrat Muhammad for justice and humanity, with his seventy-two relatives and friends in the Battle of Karbala. Even after looting everything, Imam Hussain in Karbala showed indomitable courage in favor of the truth, which has illuminated the world till date.

What is Imam Hussain's story:  In fact, during the first 10 days of this month, Hazrat Imam Hussain, a veteran of Hazrat Muhammad, was fighting for the protection of religion. The battle was fought in Karbala city, which is located in Iraq. In Karbala, in 680 AD (60 Hijri), Yajid became a Khalifa of the religion of Islam. He wanted to spread his supremacy throughout Arabia, for which the biggest challenge before him was Imam Hussain, the Chirag of the dynasty of Prophet Muhammad, who was not ready to bow down to Yajid under any circumstances.

Yajid was persecuting Imam Hussain and his convoy on the strength of his heavy military force. The convoy consisted of 72 people including his family members and followers. At first Imam Hussain came to Mecca from Medina with a convoy of his family and companions, but when Yazid was not ready to lay down, he left Mecca for the city of Kufa, Iraq, but on the way Yazid's army took Imam Hussain from the desert of Karbala and stopped the convoy.

The only source of water in this hot desert was the Euphrates River. The army of Yadis guarded this river.  Despite all these troubles, Imam Hussain did not bow down and finally war was declared.

In the pages of history, Imam Hussain's saga of saving religion and fighting against untruth is recorded. How 72 brave men fought the war fearlessly in front of about 80,000 Yajid soldiers. In the battle, he sacrificed in the name of Allah. He overcame thirst, pain, hunger and suffering in the love of virtue, high thought, spirituality and Allah, taught by his family. Hussain kept burying the dead bodies of his brothers and his companions till the day of 10th Muharram. After this, when Imam Hussain was in Sajda during the prayers of Asr, a Yazidi attacked Hussain with deceit and Hussain was martyred.

Importance of fasting in Muharram:

It is a tradition to keep fast on the 9th and 10th of the month of Muharram. It is believed that after the month of Ramadan, the fast of Muharram is considered to be the most special.
