Akhilesh Yadav Ally To Back NDA Presidential Candidate Droupadi Murmu!

As reported by NDTV Yashwant Sinha's campaign as the opposition presidential candidate suffered another setback on Friday when Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav's ally OP Rajbhar pledged support to government candidate Droupadi Murma.

Mr Rajbhar is the latest of the largely anti-BJP parties to split into opposition after former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren earlier this week.

Uddhav Thackeray, who initially supported opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha, switched in favor of Ms Murmu on Tuesday.

The move was widely seen as an attempt to stem a growing rift within the party that led to the collapse of his government a few weeks ago.

Two days later, against its partner Congress, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) joined the list of non-NDA parties supporting Droupadi Murma in Monday's presidential election, citing her tribal identity.

The JMM, led by Chief Minister Hemant Soren, himself a tribal, has led the ruling alliance in Jharkhand - where the population is 26 per cent tribal - since 2019. Ms Murmu, who hails from Odisha, is also the governor of Jharkhand as reported by NDTV.
