CBI arrests IAS officer K Rajesh in arms license bribery case

The CBI on Wednesday arrested Gujarat IAS officer K Rajesh for alleged bribery in sanctioning arms licenses to ineligible persons, officials said.
K Rajesh, a 2011-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, was called to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Ahmedabad office for questioning, but he allegedly did not cooperate and was taken into custody, they added.

It is alleged that when Rajesh was the collector of Surendranagar district, he took bribes for land deals and sanctioning arms licenses to ineligible people, officials said.

In May, the agency arrested Mohammad Rafiq Menon, who allegedly worked as a go-between for the officer earlier.

Apart from granting arms licenses to ineligible people, Rakesh is also alleged to have taken bribes for allotment of government land and regularization of encroached government land in the name of ineligible beneficiaries.

"On the request of the Gujarat government, a preliminary investigation was earlier registered in this matter. The current case is a result of PE," the CBI said after registering the case.

After the case was filed, the agency conducted searches at the premises of the accused in Gandhinagar and Surat (in Gujarat) and Rajahmundry (in Andhra Pradesh), which led to the recovery of incriminating documentary and digital evidence, it said.
