C-295 Aircraft Will Be Made For First Time In India: Tata's Deal With European Company Airbus


Vadodara: The Airbus C-295 military transport aircraft meant for the Indian Air Force will be manufactured by Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) in Gujarat's Vadodara. For this, Tata has tied up with European company Airbus. 

The special thing is that such aircraft were not made in the country till now. The total cost of this project is Rs 21,935 crore. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate this plant in Vadodara on Sunday. Defence secretary Ajay Kumar said Thursday the aircraft will be manufactured outside of Europe for the first time. The C295 i is a new-generation tactical airlifter in the light and medium segments

Deal was signed with Airbus in 2021: In September 2021, India signed a deal with Airbus Defense and Space (ADSpace) worth about Rs 21,000 crore. In this, there was a deal to buy C-295 aircraft instead of the old Avro-748. 56 aircraft were requisitioned. Of these, 16 will come from Spain and the remaining 40 will be made in Vadodara, Gujarat.

A Defence Ministry official said that these aircrafts will be completely indigenous. Between September 2023 and August 2025, 16 aircraft will be handed over in ready condition. The indigenously made aircraft will be supplied from 2026 to 2031.

Specialty of the aircraft: PM Modi has been constantly talking about making the defense field self-reliant. In this episode, now such aircrafts will be manufactured in the country, which can be easily taken to difficult terrains. 

These aircraft will be equipped with a capacity to carry 71 soldiers, 44 paratroopers and 24 stretchers. These aircraft will also be equipped with indigenously made electronic warfare suite. These aircraft will be very useful in times of natural calamity. It will be useful in the rescue operation.

According to Airbus, the C295 conducts all-weather multi-role operations worldwide. The aircraft can be transformed into several variants, including a water bomber, for transporting VIPs and for medical evacuation.
